About

My name is John Dougherty, and I love telling stories.

As a writer, I love exploring the intersections of faith and pop culture, parenting, justice issues, and everyday life. I write personal essays, spiritual reflections, cultural analysis, and the weekly Catholic Movie Club column at America Magazine (visit my Writing page for my full portfolio).

I also love writing fiction; my short story, "The Provincial & the Pilgrim," was selected as a winner of Jesuits.org's Pilgrim Stories initiative, celebrating the 500th anniversary of St. Ignatius of Loyola's conversion.

As a campus minister with over a decade of experience in Jesuit schools, I help students to dig deeper into their stories, and discover God in the day-to-day.

I have a B.A. in Psychology from Loyola University of Maryland and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry with a specialization in Youth & Young Adult Faith from the Boston College School of Theology & Ministry. Over the years I have designed, organized, and led retreats for high school and college students, adult colleagues, and parents.

To relax, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and long walks (I won't lie to you and say I like running but I do it, occasionally). I live outside of Philadelphia with my wife and two children.
